About the role
IES Nepal is seeking an experienced Water Resources Engineer to join our Research & Consulting team. You will lead and contribute to hydrological modelling, flood risk assessment and water resources management projects across Nepal's major river basins, working alongside multidisciplinary teams of hydrologists, GIS specialists and field surveyors.
This role involves both desk-based technical analysis and periodic field deployments to river sites, monitoring stations and project areas — typically 30–40% field time depending on the project cycle.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct hydrological and hydraulic modelling using HEC-RAS, SWAT, HBV or equivalent — including calibration and validation against observed station data
- Prepare floodplain maps, flood inundation models and design flood estimates for engineering projects and risk assessments
- Carry out river morphology assessments, sediment transport analysis and bathymetric data interpretation
- Participate in field data collection, hydrological monitoring and site investigations across Nepal's river basins
- Contribute to technical reports, feasibility studies, EIAs and donor-facing deliverables — ensuring quality and timeliness
- Coordinate with GIS, remote sensing and survey colleagues to integrate spatial data into hydrological analysis
- Support proposal development by contributing technical sections, methodology notes and cost estimates
Qualifications & experience
Required
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Water Resources Engineering, Civil Engineering, Hydrology or Environmental Engineering
- Minimum 2 years of professional experience in hydrological modelling or water resources management
- Proficiency in at least one hydrological modelling tool (HEC-RAS, SWAT, HBV, MIKE or equivalent)
- Working knowledge of GIS tools (QGIS or ArcGIS) and remote sensing data
- Strong technical report writing and presentation skills in English and Nepali
Preferred
- Master's degree or higher in a relevant discipline
- Experience working on donor-funded projects (UNDP, World Bank, ADB, JICA, SDC or similar)
- Familiarity with Nepal's river basin system and DHM monitoring network
- Experience with satellite-derived hydrological datasets (MODIS, TRMM, GPM, Sentinel)
