About the Project
The Bheri 4 Storage Hydroelectric Project is a 300 MW storage hydropower scheme located across Surkhet, Salyan, Jajarkot and Rukum West districts of Karnali Province in western Nepal. The project harnesses the combined flow of the Bheri River and Chheda River with a design discharge of 275 m³/s — representing one of the largest hydropower schemes under development in the Karnali basin.
Bheri Energy Company Pvt. Ltd. engaged IES Nepal to carry out the foundational field survey and monitoring programme required for detailed engineering design: a detailed topographic survey of the 145-hectare dam and headworks area; installation of a staff gauge and discharge measurement at the dam site; and an intensive suspended sediment sampling and laboratory analysis programme on the Bheri River covering the full monsoon cycle.
Field work was executed between November 2017 and October 2018 across multiple mobilisations, capturing both dry-season and peak-monsoon hydrological and sediment conditions — data essential for turbine design optimisation, reservoir sedimentation modelling and environmental baseline documentation.
What We Did
Detailed topographic survey — 145 Ha at dam and headworks site
Established a control point network connected to the national grid coordinate system of Nepal using GDPS static transfer from national trig points. Carried out detailed topographic survey of 145 Ha covering the dam site, headworks and tailrace areas using total station and DGPS RTK method. River cross-section survey at headworks and tailrace sites at 50 m intervals.
GIS mapping and survey report — Volume 1 (Main Report) & Volume 2 (Drawings)
Produced complete GIS outputs from all survey data. Prepared the survey report in two volumes: Volume 1 — Main Report covering control network, methodology, survey specifications and results; Volume 2 — Drawings comprising topographic maps, cross-section sheets, plan and profile drawings at engineering scale for all surveyed areas.
Staff gauge installation and discharge measurement — 6 campaigns
Installed a 6-metre staff gauge at the dam site with accompanying cross-section survey of the gauge control section. Conducted discharge measurement by sounding reel method from the suspension bridge at the dam site over 6 campaigns in November 2017 and May 2018, capturing low-flow and early monsoon discharge conditions.
Suspended sediment sampling — 244 samples over 4 months (monsoon)
Intensive suspended load sampling by depth-integrated point sampling method on the Bheri River at two samples per day over four months, capturing the full monsoon sediment transport regime. Laboratory analysis included Sediment Concentration Test (244 samples), Mineral Content Test (32 samples) and Particle Size Distribution Test (32 samples) — 308 laboratory tests in total.
Data analysis, rating curves and sediment monitoring report
Analysis and interpretation of all sediment laboratory results — developing sediment concentration–discharge rating curves, mineral composition profiles and grain-size distribution envelopes for the Bheri River at the dam site. Prepared the comprehensive hydrology and sediment monitoring report for use in detailed engineering design, turbine specification and environmental impact documentation.
